Kaede first encountered the Himalayas while trekking through Nepal; noon sun glinted off the untouched snow, and the mountains seemed to breathe in shades of ivory and mist-grey. Back in Kyoto she sought to capture that purity in leather. She waited months for a single Himalaya crocodile hide: only the palest, un-scarred belly scales would do. Each panel endured multiple hand-brushed dye baths, coaxing the skin from cloud-white to stone-taupe—one flaw and the piece was discarded.

From this elusive gradient she cut a slender band, lined it in butter-soft nubuck, and edged it with waxed linen thread. Where the throat meets light, she set a jasmine bloom sculpted from the same full-grain leather—petals skived razor-thin, curled over warm brass, then fixed between twin gold-tone rings.

Kaede is a Kyoto leather savant who works with nothing but her own hands and an excess of time. Her medium is tō-gawa—a near-lost discipline demanding monastic patience: hides submerged, kneaded, then left to hibernate under moonlit air until they blush with the depth of 12th-century lacquer. The cruelty of the craft, she notes with a half-smile, is that even identical motions can never yield identical results: “This isn’t production; it’s an awakening.”

For this pop-up she has shaped a handful of one-of-one pieces, each skived, burnished, and coaxed to breathe on its own. Kaede has never pledged herself to any brand, yet she hints that if enough collectors truly “read the language of leather,” she may break that rule.
